The Journey

 

A lifelong Artist with a background in various crafts, I discovered ceramic tile to be the perfect narrative language for expressing symbolic ideas and potent dreams.

Instead of pursuing a traditional university education, my path led into the dynamic world of the Motion Picture Industry as a Sign Writer/Graphic Artist. The progression from Journeyman to Supervisor over ten years provided many opportunities to learn from other artists representing diverse crafts from all corners of the globe. This hands on experience was a unique and comprehensive education, extending beyond the confines of a classroom.  

 

In spite of this cultural success, the proverbial question, "Who Am I?" compelled me to leave Los Angeles and the status and security it provided and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Drawing upon this graphic foundation and having embraced the extending study of ceramics at the local Junior College, an unexpected turn happened when the 2003 wildfires consumed my home and studio.  Emerging from the ashes, I began offering these combined skills by crafting custom tiles for individuals and businesses in the San Diego area, operating as Indigo Design Studios.  It was these commissioned works that unlocked the idea of tile paintings and the boundless potential as a narrative through which stories could be revealed.

 

In-between custom requests, my artistic focus has been to express the lessons and truths discovered from taking that first step outside the bounds of safety and trusting the process of living. 'Dreams and Contemplations' emerged over a 16 year period manifested in-between creating custom tile for clients. 

 

My intention in creating these images is to engage imagination and stimulate meaningful conversations.  Above all, the primary aspiration in sharing these personal discoveries is to demonstrate that there is a common thread that unites us all.
